Raymond James, Truro was founded by the Branch Principal, Simon Burnett
Simon began his career in the City of London in 1999 working on the equities trading floor at Goldman Sachs. Simon went on to work on the open outcry trading floor in Amsterdam before returning to London as a senior equity dealer at State Street Global Advisers. In his final few years in the City, Simon worked as a director at the international equities broker ITG, before relocating to Cornwall in 2011 with his wife and four children.
Simon transferred his expertise to the private client arena joining Charles Stanley and latterly Walker Crips Investment Management, before setting up an independent branch with Raymond James.
Simon is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investments. He holds a degree in Economics and a Master’s degree in International Securities, Investment and Banking from the ICMA Centre at the Henley Business School. He is responsible for constructing and managing portfolios for private clients and their families, companies, charities and trusts throughout the UK and abroad.
Simon also serves as a trustee for the Duchy Health Charity and is a member of their finance committee.
Alan Duff
Alan joined Raymond James Truro as a Chartered Wealth Manager shortly after the branch’s first anniversary. Alan’s interest in the stock market started at an early age and, in 1994 age 17, he did a week’s work experience at Westlake & Co. Stockbrokers. He enjoyed the experience so much that he returned for a further 3-week stint during his summer holidays.
At the age of 18, Alan moved to London to study Economics at University College London. Post-graduation, following a year at Silver Levene Accountants, Alan saw an opportunity to join a small but rapidly growing company providing services to the booming telecom sector. The role involved doing business in, and travelling to many of Europe’s capitals, and across the Atlantic to New York, Sao Paulo, and Rio de Janeiro.
In 2002, Alan’s passion for learning and adventure saw him return to Brazil where he spent 6-months and completed an Executive Development Program course on Telecommunications at the Business School Sao Paulo.
Later that year, he returned to Cornwall, the county in which he grew up and joined Stockdale Asset Management. Stockdale Asset Management was one of the first branches of Raymond James in the UK. Over the next 20 years, Alan contributed to the branch’s success and was ultimately promoted to the role of Chief Investment Officer.
Alan is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investments. He holds a degree in Economics from University College London.
Simon and Alan use their many years of combined experience in constructing and managing portfolios for private clients and their families, companies, charities and trusts throughout the UK.
Amara Thompson
Amara joined Raymond James, Truro in November 2024. Amara recently graduated from the University of York with a degree in History. Amara was born and raised in Cornwall, where her love of her home county inspired her to focus her undergraduate dissertation on Cornish history. Prior to joining Raymond James, Amara spent eight years as a seasonal receptionist at a local holiday park.
Jonathan Mills
Jonathan embarked on his 37-year career in the City directly after finishing school, starting at Strauss Turnbull during the vibrant pre-Big Bang era before the industry’s transformative shift in 1987. Jonathan worked his way up to the dealing room, where he was eventually given the responsibility of trading a wide array of equity-related products in a risk capacity. His expertise spanned global markets, often navigating through highly volatile and rapidly changing market conditions.
Jonathan was subsequently invited to establish a new agency-based desk as Head of Trading at Bridge Internal Broking. Four years later, he accepted a position with ITG Europe as a Director, where he contributed to building and developing a groundbreaking Dealing Desk that would redefine the execution of equities on an international scale. During his nearly 25-year tenure at ITG, Jonathan oversaw various Sales and Sales Trading teams, serving as Head of both Trading and Electronic Trading desks.
Following his retirement from the City, he relocated to Cornwall to embrace a different lifestyle and begin a new chapter. He now leverages his extensive experience to advise in a new capacity, engaging with an alternative audience.
Jonathan is the Station Manager at the St Ives NCI branch, where his volunteer work with the charity Coastwatch team contributes to saving lives at sea and along the coastline. If you’re passing by, please feel free to pop in and say hello!
